What happened
- On November 3, 2026, the FDA issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for Bravecto (fluralaner) chewable tablets to treat New World screwworm infestations in dogs and puppies 1.
- The product is made by Intervet, Inc., of Rahway, New Jersey, and is available by prescription only 1.
- It follows earlier FDA actions on screwworm treatments for dogs since late 2025, which the agency lists on its updates page 2.
What the FDA said
The FDA said it is reasonable to believe the drug may be effective when used as authorized 1. The authorization stays in effect until it is revoked or the related federal declaration ends 1.
The agency noted that drugs in this class (isoxazolines) have been linked to neurologic reactions such as tremors, incoordination and seizures 1. Dosing and the exact conditions of use are in the FDA’s fact sheet and letter of authorization, so only a veterinarian should decide whether and how to use it.
Should owners worry?
According to the FDA, most dogs in the United States are at low risk, because confirmed cases are in a limited region 1. Owners of dogs that live in, travel to or return from affected areas should watch for maggots or a foul odor from wounds or body openings, and call a vet promptly if they see them 1.
