Overview

The French Bulldog is in the AKC’s Non-Sporting Group. It began with small bulldogs kept by English lace workers, and it became America’s most popular breed in the AKC’s 2022 rankings. See our French Bulldog fun facts.

Size

The AKC standard sets a maximum weight of 28 pounds, and a dog over that weight is disqualified from the show ring 3. An AKC article describes Frenchies as typically about 11 to 13 inches tall and estimates a lifespan of about 10 to 12 years 2.

Temperament

The breed standard describes the French Bulldog as well behaved, adaptable and comfortable as a companion, with an affectionate nature and even disposition, and generally active, alert and playful 3. AKC advice adds that Frenchies are friendly with families and other dogs, but can be stubborn, so they may need more training patience than some breeds 2.

Special care: the flat face

Flat-faced (“brachycephalic”) dogs can have narrowed airways, and research found that risk rises as the face gets shorter, and that extra weight and a thicker neck make it worse. Many owners mistake noisy breathing for normal. Our guide to inherited diseases in popular dog breeds covers the details, and our exercise guide explains heat safety.

An AKC club flier also notes that the breed’s front-heavy build makes it a poor swimmer that can drown easily, so supervise any time near water 4.

Is this breed right for you?

A French Bulldog may suit you if you want a smaller companion with modest exercise needs and you are prepared to manage heat and breathing. It may not suit you if you want a dog for long hikes or hot climates, or if you are not ready for potential veterinary costs linked to the flat face.

Ask breeders about airway health in the parents, and talk to your vet before you decide.
