Overview
The Beagle belongs to the AKC’s Hound Group, where it is the most popular member 1. As a scenthound, its nose is its main tool, which shapes how it explores the world.
Size
The AKC recognizes two varieties by height: Beagles under 13 inches, and those from 13 to 15 inches 1. The weight figures I found on the AKC’s chart were garbled, so I have not given a weight range here.
Temperament
The AKC describes the Beagle as an energetic, happy, easygoing and lovable companion. Beagles are social, enjoy being around people and other dogs, and need a good amount of mental and physical activity 1,2.
A dog led by its nose benefits from scent games and sniffing walks. Our DIY enrichment games include several that suit a scenthound, and our exercise guide explains how to build a routine.
Is this breed right for you?
A Beagle may suit you if you want a sociable, cheerful dog and enjoy long, sniff-filled walks. It may not suit you if you cannot provide daily activity or if you are away for long hours, since social dogs do best with company.
Keep your dog at a healthy weight (see our nutrition guide) and ask any breeder about the health tests the breed’s national club recommends.
